Key Food is a $4+ billion grocery co-op with over 400 member-owned stores along the East Coast. After successfully establishing a strong data foundation in their SAP ERP implementation, Key Food continued their partnership with Clarkston to implement a custom “store portal” solution that would enable individual store users to interact directly with SAP. This endeavor also entailed rationalizing and converting the store-specific data into SAP and aligning the store processes with the defined data governance standards to ensure a clean “single source of truth” for their high volume of master data.

The team developed a suite of over 25 SAP Fiori applications to enable the store users to conduct their day-to-day operations using SAP on both desktop and mobile devices. For example, a store associate could scan a product in the aisle on the handheld device, update the price, then immediately print a new shelf tag on their belt printer, all while leveraging the accurate and comprehensive material and pricing data from the SAP S/4HANA backend system.

In order to build new capabilities with the end-user experience in mind, the team took an agile approach to prioritize, design, and develop the new applications. This included regular demos with the stores to gather input on design options, constant review and prioritization of the product backlog, and focused development efforts on the most valuable applications or features. The Clarkston team also supported the data conversion and onboarding efforts for the stores, as the solution was deployed in a phased approach to member stores. Ultimately, the project team laid the technology foundation for Key Food to bring new capabilities to the stores and prepare for continued business growth.
