As the growth and innovation investment arm of one of the largest biopharmaceutical companies in the world, this client invests primarily in early and growth stage technology companies that support digital health and biopharmaceutical operations. As they prepared for their next round of investments, the client wanted to better understand (1) the new innovations in clinical and commercial biopharmaceutical supply chain and manufacturing and (2) what are the challenges and opportunities facing the business that could be solved with new tools and technologies.
To better understand what and who are the key players in biopharmaceutical innovation, the client engaged Clarkston Consulting’s life sciences experts to conduct a comprehensive market evaluation and landscape assessment of the trends, use cases, deals, and companies impacting specific areas within clinical and commercial manufacturing and supply chain.
As part of the engagement, Clarkston conducted interviews and workshops with different working teams from the business to map their challenges, needs, and opportunities, researched and provided insight on the emerging trends in and out of their industry, identified who the key and emerging players are with the space, and finally develop investment profiles for the fund to begin their next stage of evaluation for investment. The biopharmaceutical trends explored include advanced 3D technologies, generative AI design, manufacturing automation, digital twins, modular manufacturing, and new approach methodologies to reduce animal testing.
It was critical to the Fund’s mission to ensure that their investments align with not just the needs of the business but also to the overall strategy of the business overall. After validating the uses cases for each of the technologies with the business working teams, we analyzed the business’s strategy and aligned the use cases and outputs to its core pillars.
As a result of this engagement, the client gained a better understanding of the needs and opportunities that exist within the business, a comprehensive landscape assessment of the trending topics in biopharmaceutical supply chain and manufacturing, and an ecosystem of technology start-ups that are potential investment opportunities.
