A lack of health equity in clinical trials can have severe effects upon ROI and customer relationships once at market.
Equitable clinical trial design and delivery is essential to properly measure treatment effectiveness and safety for therapies serving global patient populations. While the concept is nothing new to the clinical trial space and progress has certainly been made, sponsors must be intentional when designing clinical trials — from site locations to patient screening criteria — to ensure that patient populations best represent those potentially eligible for their therapies.
Equitable representation beyond races and ethnicity is required; it includes individuals from differing socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities, neurodivergences, and physical disabilities in the overall population.
Low diversity within your patient base not only limits revenue potential, but also puts your company’s reputation and relationship with minority populations at risk. Integrating DEI initiatives into your budget, trial strategy, and communication plans is imperative for staying in line with shifting industry regulations and growing patient expectations. To create diverse, highly trusted clinical trials, clinical operation teams must make DEI strategies a priority in the initial planning stages.

Diversity Action Plans for Clinical Trials
Sponsors should be prepared to submit mandatory diversity action plans for certain late-stage drug trials, including all phase 3 trials and most device studies. The diversity action plan must include the sponsor’s goals for enrollment in the clinical study, the sponsor’s rationale for those goals, and an explanation of how the sponsor intends to meet them.
