Designing a Holistic Digital Strategy for a Clinical Trials Organization
Clarkston recently provided a holistic IT and digital strategy roadmap for a publicly traded clinical trials technology and services provider. The client engaged Clarkston to meet their goals of evolving into a mature organization.
Clarkston conducted deep-dives with key stakeholders and leadership teams to understand the current IT landscape. To attain the ideal future state, Clarkston bridged the gap by facilitating various cross-functional workshops and establishing guiding principles and ways of working amongst IT and the business units. Clarkston deployed its proprietary IT maturity and gap assessment survey to further understand current IT state and target future state.
Based on the themes observed, Clarkston applied a prioritization framework that measures business benefit and required “lift.” The areas of focus were then further prioritized into three waves using a “Crawl, Walk, Run” philosophy to consider existing business constraints around resources and budgets.

Clarkston recommended remediations for key improvement areas that had the greatest impact on the client’s ability to scale business and transform IT, specifically tailored to balance the day-to-day requirements of IT against strategic investments and the enabling key capabilities the business needs to win in the market.
Clarkston used industry standard benchmarks to develop our recommendations around critical areas, including IT governance, cybersecurity posture, knowledge transfer, organizational structure, technology roadmap, application rationalization, and resource management. Once prioritized, a new lens was applied to better understand the “lift” required by both business and IT stakeholders to transform IT. This approach yielded an estimated effort and degree of involvement between BUs and IT. In addition to the comprehensive roadmap, Clarkston also provided the client with best practices for cybersecurity posture, IT organizational design, and consumption-based IT models for spend.
Through this partnership, the client was able to understand and prioritize areas of focus to achieve their near-, mid-, and long-term vision for their organization. As a result of this work, the client has already executed several key recommendations made by Clarkston team as part of this digital strategy project.
