A global apparel retailer partnered with Clarkston Consulting to implement a transportation management solution (TMS) that would provide better visibility into store deliveries and improve logistics efficiency across all of its seven brands. The client aimed to enhance supply chain transparency and reduce transportation costs by leveraging pool distribution, especially effective since many of their stores are located in malls with multiple brand locations.
The new solution allows store employees to view incoming shipments from distribution centers, understand what’s inside each carton (whether it’s prepacks or supply items like hangers) and track the carrier handling the delivery. Pool distribution, which consolidates freight by geographic location, helps reduce costs by limiting the use of high-priced parcel carriers such as UPS.
Clarkston stepped in after a previous vendor fell behind schedule. The team led the remaining phases of the project— design, development planning, testing, and deployment — for the retailer’s remaining brands. Clarkston worked closely with the client’s transportation and IT teams to meet complex needs, including supporting third-party logistics (3PL) operations at the distribution centers, managing product hierarchies for proper allocation, and integrating with external carrier systems.
The final solution consolidated transportation visibility for two warehouse management systems operating within the same distribution center. It also aligned data and labeling processes to meet external platform requirements.
The client realized key benefits: cost savings through expanded pool carrier usage, improved tracking of damaged goods and proof of delivery, and better store-level labor planning thanks to enhanced shipment visibility. Most importantly, all brands are now unified under a single transportation management system, creating operational consistency across the board.
