Gender Inequity: Taking Stock with Irene Birbeck
When considering the gender inequity that remains so pervasive within corporate America, the numbers are quite staggering. Consider the following:
- Both men and women are twice as likely to hire a male candidate
- Men are 30% more likely to obtain managerial roles
- 23% of CEOs are women and only 6.6% of CEOs at Fortune 500 companies are women
- 72 women for every 100 men are promoted and hired as managers
Gender Inequity
Going into 2020, women held the majority of American jobs for the first time in almost of decade. However, women still engage in more hours of household activities and caring for household members per week compared to men across all age categories. And this matters when women take on greater efforts in the workplace without reducing the efforts made in the household.
In this week’s Taking Stock, I sit down with Irene Birbeck, a Partner at Clarkston Consulting. Irene shares her perspectives on a wide range of topics related to gender equity in the workforce and the barriers that unfortunately still remain in place. Through our discussion, we explore biases that we all have and how that impacts how and who we hire, how we evaluate performance and how we behave in everyday conversations. We also touch upon issues related to the ‘mindset’ of conforming, specifically whether or not that is a healthy attitude to have. Or, is it better to be aware of what makes you different, navigate through those differences and look to drive change.
