This client is a global pharmaceutical company with a broad specialty medicines portfolio. As part of a company-wide strategy focused on both growth and cost optimization, the Global IT organization sought to realign its organizational structure and operating model to better position itself as a strategic enabler for the business through increasing speed and responsiveness, prioritizing value realization, improving IT efficiency, and standardizing internal IT processes and roles.

In previous years, the company concentrated the majority of its resources on large-scale enterprise-wide platforms. While this helped to standardize systems and improve efficiency across the broader organization, it also created gaps in other functional areas. As a result, several IT management units lacked the flexibility, resources, and skillset required to support evolving business needs. Recognizing the needs for a more balanced future ready organization, executive leadership engaged Clarkston Consulting to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the global IT organization.

Clarkston partnered with the IT leadership team to interview key stakeholders, conduct a detailed spans and layers assessment, perform its Organizational Network Analysis of the informal collaboration network, and evaluate management structures against industry benchmarks. In addition, Clarkston led a comprehensive capability alignment analysis to determine which skillsets should reside within each IT management unit and to identify where capabilities could be retained internally versus supported through external partnerships.

Through this engagement, Clarkston provided the client with actionable insights into organizational effectiveness and future state design opportunities. Recommendations focused on optimizing spans of control, enhancing organizational clarity, and defining the skills and capabilities required to support the company’s growth and modernization objectives. By aligning structure and strategy, Clarkston helped the client lay the foundation for a more agile, efficient and business aligned IT organization.
